12/30/2023 0 Comments James mcpherson battle cry of freedom![]() ![]() This authoritative volume makes sense of that vast and confusing "second American Revolution" we call the Civil War, a war that transformed a nation and expanded our heritage of liberty. This "new birth of freedom," as Lincoln called it, constitutes the proudest legacy of America's bloodiest conflict. Eventually, the North had to grapple with the underlying cause of the war-slavery-and adopt a policy of emancipation as a second war aim. The book's title refers to the sentiments that informed both the Northern and Southern views of the conflict: the South seceded in the name of that freedom of self-determination and self-government for which their fathers had fought in 1776, while the North stood fast in defense of the Union founded by those fathers as the bulwark of American liberty. Particularly notable are McPherson's new views on such matters as the slavery expansion issue in the 1850s, the origins of the Republican Party, the causes of secession, internal dissent and anti-war opposition in the North and the South, and the reasons for the Union's victory. Packed with drama and analytical insight, the book vividly recounts the momentous episodes that preceded the Civil War-the Dred Scott decision, the Lincoln-Douglas debates, John Brown's raid on Harper's Ferry-and then moves into a masterful chronicle of the war itself-the battles, the strategic maneuvering on both sides, the politics, and the personalities. The esteemed, Pulitzer Prize-Winning history of the Civil War that brings to vivid life, the generals, the presidents, the soldiers. James McPherson's fast-paced narrative fully integrates the political, social, and military events that crowded the two decades from the outbreak of one war in Mexico to the ending of another at Appomattox. The tipping point is when Lincoln called for 75,000 troops.Filled with fresh interpretations and information, puncturing old myths and challenging new ones, Battle Cry of Freedom will unquestionably become the standard one-volume history of the Civil War. The South was forced into a war that they could not win without foreign recognition and intervention. ![]() I would have quickly put this book away had it been slanted toward the northern viewpoint. After finishing I reflected back and now understand how different flash points kept stacking up and setting moods for the coming apocalypse. The author did an amazing job of setting up the mood of the country and even breaking it down to different areas such as 'the border states' and the 'lower South'. The War for Southern Independence began many years before 1861. I would have quickly put this book away had it been slanted toward the northern view I got exactly what I wanted to from this book. I got exactly what I wanted to from this book. Name me another right! I know that some accuse Republicans of simply using this issue as a partisan way to get more votes and to that I say, great! They were doing politics right! I don't care what rationale Lincoln had to use to get those racist white bastards to give up slavery so long as it worked. Wrong! It was about one state right, slavery. I challenge anyone to read this and still think that the Civil War wasn't about slavery. I care more about the social and political aspects that led to the Civil War. I don't like reading about military battles. However, I only listened to volume one and not the entire thing. "But Joe, it was about state's rights!" Wrong! It was about one stat I agree with the esteemed scholar and former male model Matt Suder when he says this should be required reading in school. This includes economic, political, and social causes. I care more about the social and political aspects that led to the Civil War. This is a very comprehensive discussion of the causes of the Civil War. Author: McPherson, James M., 1936- Format: Book xix, 904 p., 16 p. I don't like reading about military battles. Available in the National Library of Australia collection. I agree with the esteemed scholar and former male model Matt Suder when he says this should be required reading in school.
